Buffalo Creek Survivor
This is an interview with survivor Everett Adkins that was recorded on videotape at the Red Cross Shelter at the Man High School soon after the flood. It is one of the extra features on the Appalshop DVD of The Buffalo Creek Flood: An Act of Man and Buffalo Creek Revisited.
On February 26, 1972, a coal-waste dam owned by the Pittston Company collapsed at the head of a crowded hollow in southern West Virginia. A wall of sludge, debris and water tore through the valley below, leaving in its wake 125 dead and 4,000 homeless. In response Appalshop filmmaker Mimi Pickering produced these films, which powerfully portray the impact of the disaster.
With support from the Women’s Film Preservation Fund, National Endowment for the Arts, National Film Preservation Program and Cineric Laboratory, Appalshop Archivists preserved the 16mm film originals to create new color negatives, projection prints, videos and the DVD available for purchase from Appalshop.
