On Feb 2, 2011, Williamson, WV, celebrated the arrival of a new energy source with the first solar installation on a downtown building. Standing in front of a of solar panel like the ones going up on his office roof, Dr. Dino Beckett called it "a great day for the city and the Tug Valley. We've all had sticker shock over the power bills this winter, and this is one way to offset those costs."
The Jobs Project, a local group dedicated to creating local jobs by bringing renewable energy projects to the area, has been working with the city of Williamson and other partners to bring solar technology to the area. Mountain View Solar & Wind trained residents in solar installation technology while completing the project. Eric Mathis of the The Jobs Project thinks this is a significant step that lays the groundwork for hundreds of renewable energy projects in the coalfields.
