Appalshop in the Big Apple

Posted 05/24/13

Join Friends of Appalshop NYC for an afternoon of film, food and conversation! Come celebrate Appalachian culture and engage with other New Yorkers to learn about the rich and diverse community of the coal fields of central Appalachia. This is a free event.

Appalshop (www.appalshop.org) is a multi-disciplinary arts and education center in the heart of Appalachia producing original films, video, theater, music and spoken-word recordings, radio, photography, multimedia, and books. This forty-year-old organization is home of projects such as The Appalachian Media Institute, Roadside Theater, WMMT-FM, and Thousand Kites.

Although New York City lies just outside the extended Appalachian region, the issues and interests of central Appalachia echo across the whole nation. Screening short films and clips from the Appalshop archive such as Stranger with a Camera, we will engage in conversation about environmental, social, and economic justice, and the connections between central Appalachia and our home in New York City.

Appalshop in the Big Apple will serve as an introduction to the work of Appalshop and a kick off event to many future film screenings and gatherings throughout the greater New York area.
