Lezioni di Dottorato Dr. Luca Buoninfante (Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics, Stockholm, Sweden)

Perturbative Quantum Field Theory (pQFT) has been the most successful framework through which theoretical physicists of the last century have been able to select theories and describe the dynamics of electromagnetic, weak and strong interactions. In the first part of this course we will review and discuss at a more advanced level basic aspects of pQFT such as locality of the interactions, symmetries, unitarity and renormalizability. We will explain how powerful the criterion of renormalizability is to select fundamental Lagrangians in pQFT. In the second part of the course we will apply pQFT to the description of the gravitational interaction. In particular, we will show the failure of the perturbative renormalizability of Einstein`s general relativity and discuss a promising ultraviolet completion (in the context of pQFT) which involves the addition of quadratic curvature invariants i nto the Lagrangian.

This theory is known as Quadratic Gravity and is strictly renormalizable as any other Standard Model interaction.

The course includes 10 hours of frontal lectures on the blackboard.
