The course prepares scholars who will be able to work in the areas of research, in the preparation and divulgation of cultural products, on the basis of specific scientific knowledge in the fields of literature, history, geography and philology. Its graduates' professional profile is principally that of the school teacher of Arts subjects, as well as that of high level professionals employed in cultural enterprises, managing, organizing and publicizing cultural events. Graduates in Modern Philology are able to work in different professions both as free-lance or as employees in education, information, communication and other modern technologies.
Admission Requirements
Students wishing to enroll on the course must have specific competence in philology, literature, linguistics, history, history of art and geography. Graduates of First-level degrees in General Arts(Class 5, DM 509, and L 10, DM 270) are admitted to the course if they have obtained 60 credits in the following scientific sectors: L-FIL-LET/09, L-FIL-LET/10, L-FIL-LET/11, L-FIL-LET/12, L-FIL-LET/04, L-FIL-LET/13, L-FIL-LET/14, L-LIN/01, L-ANT/03, L-ART/01, L-ART/02, L-ART/03, M-GGR/01, M-STO/01, M-STO/02, M-STO/04, 24 of which must be in subjects pertaining to philology, history, Italian language and literature(L-FIL-LET/09, L-FIL-LET/10, M-STO/01, M-STO/02, M-STO/04, L-FIL-LET/12).
Graduates of other First-level degrees are admitted to the course if they have obtained 90 credits in the following scientific sectors: L-FIL-LET/09, L-FIL-LET/10, L-FIL-LET/11, L-FIL-LET/04, L-FIL-LET/12, L-FIL-LET/13, L-FIL-LET/14, L-ANT/03, L-LIN/01, L-LIN/04, L-LIN/12, M-GGR/01, L-ART/01, L-ART/02, L-ART/03, M-STO/01, M-STO/02, M-STO/04, 32 of which must be in subjects pertaining to philology, history, Italian language and literature(L-FIL-LET/09, L-FIL-LET/10, M-STO/01, M-STO/02, M-STO/04, L-FIL-LET/12). Graduates of the former four-year degree courses, or holding diplomas and degrees taken abroad and recognized in Italy, are admitted as long as they have obtained 90 credits as above through validation and conversion into credits of the exams taken during their courses.
Prospective students are deemed qualified if they have obtained an average weighted mark of 26/30 (in the Italian system)on their previous course. Should their average be lower their qualifications will be tested in an interview where they will be questioned on philology, literature and modern and contemporary history.
Job opportunities
Graduates of the Second-level course may find employment in a great variety of areas linked to the cultural sector. First of all as teachers in primary and secondary schools, but their high-level training enables them to hold posts of considerable responsibility in the organization, divulgation and promotion of cultural products. Other possible employment might be in the cultural industry in general, in specific institutions such as cultural centres, literary agencies, foundations, private and public bodies and institutes involving the promotion and management of the cultural products and resources that are present in the local area.
Continuation of studies
Graduates of the Second-level degree course may continue to study either for higher level diplomas or PhDs in one or other of the scientific sectors taught on the course.
Information and tutorship
The Faculty of Arts and Arts course websites provide all the necessary information about courses and course structures, teachers, syllabuses, timetables, dates of exams and discussions of dissertations.
Students may receive personal assistance at the office of the President of the Arts course. Tutors are available to First and Second year students and must be contacted by students with insufficiencies.
A Committee advises students on their choice of subjects and compilation of their personal syllabus.
A Work experience committee advises students on their choice of the work experience needed to complete the course (rules and regulations at: http://www.letterefilosofia.unisa.it/servizi/orientamento_tutorato). During their period of work experience students are given an academic tutor and a professional tutor.

Every effort will be made to provide students from abroad with tutors who speak English and/or French.
Educational organization
The course is structured in a single curriculum around a group of core subjects including philology and teaching methods (of Italian literature and language and Latin), a foreign literature (English or French), and history.
Courses are taught conventionally and on a semester basis.
The final exam consists in the discussion of an original thesis on a subject chosen by the student and one of the course teachers; depending on the nature of the subject this may also be a practical exam.
